"And yet here I sit, in 2008, a young man of 20 years..."

Geez Hugo. I never knew you were so young! Got yourself a pretty good job, I'm kinda jealous. :)

Don't be. I can't begin to describe the arduous and painful process of testing numerous services designed to allow me to listen to a huge database of awesome music.

Rub it in Hugo!

And here I sit with a slow buggy Vista notebook, an accounting grad with slow as molasses Internet.

I guess I can take solace in the fact that you may blow out your ears! :)

P.S. Agree about Napster.

I love Napster, and had a subscription for about 4 years! However I've had to cancel it as the current UK client doesn't work with IE8 Beta 2 (even if you add the Napster sites to compatibility view). Hopefully will be fixed soon (as the US software has no such issue)

Unfortunately it also means I have a large gap in my music collection until I rejoin

what about www.we7.com ??

free music and some pandora(style) predictive stuff??

I had to limit myself to the big name players really - otherwise this would have been 500 pages long.

Hugo,

Did you get a chance to compare the audio quality of the various options? In particular, which of the servives offers the best quality?

Michael.

Last.Fm also have an App for the I-Phone, I find this really handy.. Fancy a bit of ABBA, do the search and a playlist of ABBA and ABBA related songs start streaming to my phone.

Have to echo the Last.fm iPhone app loving. As you say it's very handy and helped me rediscover the awesomeness of The Charlatans.

A combination of Last.fm and Apple's Genius have expanded my music library to no end.

The only good thing about Napster is those awesome "we're coming back" animations they made.

Another vote for Last.fm. It's definitely got me buying more music than I used to.

I'm old fashioned when it comes to music purchase - lasers and shiny discs are still cool. It would have been interesting to include music video features in your round up or maybe a separate feature at a later date. Also I would have guessed Yahoo Music to be up there as big name player.
Very good review anyway.

Pandora was the best. Its a shame rights issues made it shut in the UK.
